In an effort to contain the spread of COVID-19, the provincial government has declared a second provincial emergency that took effect on January 14, 2021 and has enacted several restrictions that came into effect for Toronto and Peel regions Monday, November 23 at 12:01 a.m. and for the entire province on December 26, 2020.
Most of our community will continue to operate online and remotely. Under the strict adherence to the provincial COVID-19 response framework and University Health and Safety Guidelines, currently approved research and in-person activities can continue with a few exceptions listed below.
On November 18, 2020 York University’s Senate Executive Committee approved the extension of the Principles to Guide Fall/Winter Graduate and Undergraduate Course Planning to the Summer 2021 term.
This means that the same approach to course delivery approved for the upcoming Winter term will also apply to the Summer 2021 term.
In developing a plan that will support our eventual return to normal campus operations, the University is guided by public health and government directives as well as coordination within the university sector in Ontario. Given York’s unique environment and challenges, our plan will serve the entire community, including all faculties, programs, and campuses. As guidance from public health authorities evolves, we will continue to explore opportunities to offer more in-person learning when it is safe to do so.
Students and faculty will have access to the essential teaching and learning tools needed for a high-quality online education experience. In November, the University announced its plans for the Summer term. After consulting with the government and public health authorities, and considering our guiding principles of academic integrity, fairness to students and the dissemination of regular, timely information, the university decided to continue offering a full selection of academic programming using primarily online/remote learning, with select in-person instruction.
At all times, York is guided by public health and government directives as well as coordination within the university sector in Ontario. The university is providing a range of supports for instructors to prepare to deliver courses and programs remotely. There are also a large variety of resources and services that can help navigate remote teaching, learning, and related services. There are course and teaching aids, technologies for classrooms and labs, information systems about students, testing and evaluation guidance, and consulting services for research needs. The Office of the Vice-President Research & Innovation (VPRI) has posted COVID-19 Essential Information for Researchers. This includes ‘Ramping Up Research,’ which discusses principles for campus coordination, integration and fieldwork requirements, procedures and more; researchers’ FAQs, such as queries about equipment and supplies, HR, funding, ethics, travel and more; and key documents for researchers. This VPRI site also posts a list of York University researchers sharing expertise on and publishing articles about COVID-19, which is weekly updated.
Throughout York University’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, York has remained focused on the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff. This commitment has never wavered and remains the guiding tenet as the University complies with current restrictions.
