COVID-19 Case Status

This page will be updated regularly with the current status of confirmed COVID-19 cases reported to York University. The numbers consist of community members who were present on our campuses prior to their diagnosis (i.e. not those studying/working remotely).

In the event of a positive COVID-19 diagnosis, health authorities are responsible for assessing the risk of transmission within our community, and any needed contact tracing and follow up.

There are currently 7 confirmed cases reported at York.

What you need to know

What do I need to do if I am attending campus OR living on campus?

If you live on campus: complete the automated DAILY screening form.

If you do not live on campus but are approved to be on campus for in-person course activities: complete screening in advance of coming to campus, every time you come.

What should I do if I have had close contact with someone in the last 14 days who has tested COVID-19 positive or have received a COVID Alert exposure notification?

If you have been in close contact with someone who tested COVID-19 positive or have received a COVID alert notification, please:

    • do not come to our campuses;
    • stay at home or for those living on campus in residence, York Apartments or The Quad, please self-isolate
    • self-isolate for 14 days;
    • get a COVID-19 test; and
    • do not come to our campuses unless approved to do so.

In the last 14 days I travelled outside of Canada, what should I do?

If you travelled outside of Canada in the last 14 days:

    • do not come to our campuses; and
    • remain in quarantine for 14 days in accordance with provincial health guidelines.

In the last 14 days I travelled outside of Ontario (within Canada), what should I do?

If you have travelled outside of Ontario (within Canada) in the last 14 days:

 

During the Provincewide Shutdown, the Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) strongly advises anyone that has traveled outside of Ontario to self-isolate.

I am experiencing symptoms not related to known causes or condition, what should I do?

  • do not come to our campuses;
  • stay at home or for those living on campus in residence, York Apartments or The Quad, please self-isolate;
  • for staff/faculty, please contact public health or your healthcare provider for advice on isolation and testing. If you arrange to get tested, follow public health advice and contact EWB for further direction; and
  • for students, please reach out to OSCR for further directions regarding self-isolation and testing.

What happens when a case of COVID-19 is confirmed at York?

York has planned carefully for a variety of possible scenarios and we are utilizing our Incident Management Protocol to isolate and contain all situations that arise for those that come onto our campuses and for those within our live-in community.

In any scenario of positive COVID-19 diagnoses reported to the University, we liaise closely with Toronto Public Health, follow their guidance and provide all necessary information to assist any public health investigation. Case and limited contact management for students, staff and faculty will be supported by the appropriate offices within York University for on-campus COVID-19 related exposures. York University liaises with Toronto Public Health on all campus-related cases and follows their guidance and direction

If I am a “required services” staff or faculty, do I need to complete the COVID-19 Screening?

Yes, faculty and staff are required to complete and confirm Please report the results to your manager/academic leader. If you answer “yes” to any question, do not come to campus and contact Employee Well-Being at: EWB@yorku.ca.

What should I do if I answer ‘yes’ to any of the questions in the daily completion of the York University – COVID-19 Screening Checklist?

  • do not come to our campuses;
  • staff/faculty/instructors please advise your manager of your absence; and
  • make contact with the appropriate department as soon as possible: either EWB for staff/faculty/instructors or OSCR for students.

When can I return to campus after a positive COVID-19 test?

Each case will be determined based on its own merit, direction from the local public health unit and liaison with EWB/OSCR.

Before you are approved to return to campus following a positive COVID-19 test result, you must have satisfied your required self-isolation period and have be able to answer ‘no’ to all questions contained in the York University – COVID-19 Screening Checklist.

I have tested positive for COVID-19, what should I do?

  • do not come to our campuses;
  • staff/faculty/instructors please advise your manager of your absence; and
  • make contact with the appropriate department as soon as possible: either EWB for staff/faculty/instructors or OSCR for students.

I heard that someone who attended campus with me has tested positive for COVID-19. How will I know if I need to take action?

York has processes in place to identify close contacts, while maintaining the confidentiality of those involved. York communicates with the COVID-19 positive individual as well as others to gather information, and consults with public health authorities.

Individuals identified as close contacts, or who have potential close contacts who have tested positive, will be contacted with direction to liaise with the local public health unit should they meet the definition of a close contact. York maintains regular communication with each individual and provides confirmation of clearance to resume on-campus attendance in accordance with the public health unit, as well as York’s COVID-19 protocol.

York’s Employee Well-being (EWB) office and the Office of Student Community Relations (OSCR) assesses each case for risk of transmission and follows up with close contacts exposed to a COVID-19-positive community member. If you do not hear from EWB/OSCR, no action is required. Any questions related to specific COVID-19 potential close contact should be directed to EWB or OSCR.

If I am directed by public health to self-isolate, how will I be paid for time missed from work?

If you are able to continue working, discuss available accommodation/work from home with your manager.

If directed by public health to self-isolate and no accommodation/work from home support is available, York University will continue to pay for the self-isolation period.

Sick time may be utilized for periods of illness related to COVID-19. You could also be eligible for the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit (CRSB), please see: CSRB Information

For individuals who are required to self-isolate due to non-essential travel, you may use vacation or personal time only during this period.

Who should I contact if I have questions or concerns regarding a potential COVID-19 contact on the York University campus?

York University acknowledges that these uncertain circumstances can cause concern. Any questions related to a specific and/or potential close contact of a confirmed COVID-19 case should be directed to EWB or OSCR.

What safety measures have been put into place at York University to prevent the spread of COVID-19?

York University is compliant with all regulatory requirements set out by the federal, provincial and municipal governments.

Measures being taken to protect the health and safety of our community are specifically laid out in the YU Safety Plan.

Following a positive COVID-19 test, do I need a negative test result in order to resume on-campus attendance?

In most cases a negative COVID-19 test result is not required to resume on-campus attendance. This aligns with direction from the province of Ontario and public health.

It is mandatory for those who are cleared to return to campus following a positive COVID-19 test result, that they will have satisfied their required self-isolation period and have the ability to answer ‘no’ to all questions contained in the York University – COVID-19 Screening Checklist.

Any questions should be directed to EWB for staff/faculty/instructors or OSCR for students.
